The land was once set aside by Governor Lachlan Macquarie as a reserve for drinking water in 1811. It was known as the Lachland Swamps for its numerous pond containing good quality water. In 1888, the Lachland Swamps was declared a place for public recreation and its construction began six months before its opening ceremony. It was under the direction of Charles Moore, the then-director of Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens, that the park really took shape. The first trees were planted by visiting dignitaries at the opening ceremony on Australia Day.
