For the best bargains when it comes to accommodation and souvenirs, nothing can quite beat Kings Cross. Known as Sydney's red light district area and backpacker mecca, Kings Cross has been overlook by many visitors as an unsafe and unwelcoming place to visit.

Visitors should not overlook this part of town with its neighbour Potts Point as it full of character and history. During the 1940s, American sailors used to visit King Cross when it was based not far in Garden Island. Much of Kings Cross image has been based on the influence these sailors brought with them from America.

Upon arrival in Sydney, it is not surprising to find backpackers heading towards Victoria Street in Kings Cross where the cheapest accommodations can be found. Not only can you find cheap accommodations, shops also sell some of the most affordable food around and varies from burgers to Asian food. You can also find cheap souvenirs along the street.

Kings Cross have come a long way since those early days. Today, it even spots The Golden Gate Hotel which affords a grand view of the harbour. Leafy trees and old fashion apartment buildings make it look like a quaint quiet part of the street which it is usually during day light hours. A trendy thing to do while visiting here is to sit at one of the coffee shops around the place and sip a hot cup of cappuccino.

TIPS: To get to Kings Cross via public transport, catch the train to Kings Cross Station. Parking is not recommended due to limited parking spaces along the street.

Although Kings Cross have gained a reputation as an unsafe haven for visitors, it is recommended that you go there during the day time and even during the night. The town usually comes alive in the night and as long as you stick to the well lit streets and not wander into dark alleys, you should be safe. Food stores are usually open well into the night so you won't have to fear about being hungry. If you are still unsure about Kings Cross, don't worry as police officers frequently parade along the streets and a police station is located just opposite The Golden Gate Hotel.
